Types of Essential Oils

After learning to identify real essential oils, many people get confused upon seeing the varieties of essential oils available on the market. It does not help that the names of the essential oils are entirely foreign to lots of people. So how many types of essential oil are there actually?

There are more than 250 types of known essential oils in the world, each with its own unique characteristics and healing properties for the body and mind. If just based on the names of the essential oils, back then I believe I would be staring at bottles of essential oil, unsure what to make of it at all.

The initial encounter with essential oils, one must first determine its characteristics/attributes, then look deeper by checking out its chemical composition. If it is all-natural pure essential oils, we can usually find its GCMS certificate available for reference, it is for us to certify the chemical compound of the product we are purchasing and whether it is truly pure as stated. As for the breakdown of the chemical compounds and which ones to look out for we will discuss in detail in another post. (Especially since this topic is one of the most excruciating topics to learn when we first started on essential oils)

First of all, essential oils can be broken down into 6 categories:

  1. Flower type
    Flowers are one of the most important parts of a plant, more so in plants where its sexual reproduction system is located in the flower. Hence, flower type essential oils are used to set a romantic mood or to adjust our reproductive system, endocrine system, hormone secretion system among others. Example of these types of essential oils is Rose, Chamomile and Geranium.
  2. Grass-type
    Out in nature, the grass is the favourite hotbed for insects. Hence grass type essential oils more or less will be able to repel mosquitoes. Its scent is also more refreshing. Peppermint, Lemongrass, Rosemary belongs to this category of oils.
  3. Fruit type
    Most fruit types essential oils are extracted from its peel, and the fruit symbolizes its harvest after basking in the warmth of sunshine thus bestowing upon its oils a sunny, cheerful vibe. Therefore, fruit type essential oils are used to stimulate appetite, improve the digestive system, and give a feeling of happiness. Common essential oils include sweet orange, lemon, grapefruit, bergamot and more.
  4. Spices type
    Spices usually come from the seeds or roots of plants and are also the place where plants stores their essential oils. This type of essential oils has a strong and unique aroma. Generally, we use it as part of our cooking and plays a role in our diet. It can be used for the treatment of the digestive tract system and also promote the circulatory system. Essential oils in this category include ginger, black pepper, garlic, etc.
  5. Wood type
    Wood type essential oils contain the most fentanyl in plants. Therefore, they also have the longest lifespan among plants. They are indispensable in improving the body’s immune system and purifying the breath. Essential oils in this category include cedar, cypress, sandalwood and more.
  6. Resin type
    Resin is one of the places where the plant stores its essences, and resin grows more useful over time. Its effects include the improvement of spirituality, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and improve blood circulation. This type of essential oils includes frankincense, benzoin, myrrh among others.

Of course, this is just a general classification. After more research, we can also classify them by attributes. As for that, it is a lengthy topic that we will leave for another time.
